Thursday, February 18, 2010 ~ Second Day of Lent

Have mercy on me, O God, according to your steadfast love; according to your abundant mercy blot out my transgressions. Psalm 51:1

When my daughter-in-law Helen was seven and about to make her first confession, she spent several weeks collectingin a notebook

sins impressive enough to take to the priest. Her hardest one was a “mortal sin,” which her older sisters helped her collect. The day of her confession, the overwhelmed priest finally said, “Just give me your list, Helen!”

Surely God does not mean for us to hunt down a multitude of little sins, but to concentrate on the big ones in our lives that really need amending.Lent is the season, like the Jews’ Day of Atonement, when we evaluate ourselves and try to understand humbly how we can be

better and different or more in our lives. Most of all, we all need to

perfect the depth and versatility of our loving—of our loving all of God’s creatures. And now is the time.

~ Barbara Mabry

Let us pray

O God, hear our confessions and forgive us. Amen.
