Friday, March 5, 2010 ~ Fifteenth Day of Lent

I believe that I shall see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living. Psalm 27:13

Annie Dillard has written an amazing novel called The Living. It’s a story about a rough settlement founded in the 1850s in Bellingham Bay. Part of the roughness of this place is the closeness of death. Every family marks its family members with those living, and those who have passed on. And yet in memory, in love, in the truth of families, no one ever really passes on. They live on within us. They live on in our stories, our hopes, our dreams, our manners, our beliefs. And, thanks be to the grace of God, there is a land of the living, where we will all be united in a reality far more glorious than we can ever imagine. Only when we believe in the goodness of the Lord, will we truly see one another in that land of the living.

~ Woody Berry

Let us pray

Lord, give us vision of the goodness of life in the land of the living, where we are all alive in your presence. Amen.
