Wednesday, March 24, 2010 ~ Thirty-first Day of Lent

I press on toward the goal for the prize of the heavenly call of God in Christ Jesus. Philippians 3:14

If we were to try to identify the root metaphor that Paul uses to understand the Christian life, it would not be the one so prevalent in our culture today — that the Christian life is a "journey of discovery." Rather, his language is full of images of the Christian life as a race, a battle, or even a boxing match. In today’s reading, Paul talks about his continued quest to live the Christian life and the necessity to keep his eyes on the "prize." What is the prize of a Christian life? Not heaven. Not blessings. Not perfection. But simply to be able to live out the call of God in his own life. It’s all about the living. For Paul that living sometimes felt like a race, a battle, or even a boxing match — and sometimes it does for us as well. But sometimes it’s just the quiet living of life surrounded by the sure knowledge of the grace of God.

Let us pray

Dear God, guide us toward the prize in life of living every day in communion with Christ Jesus. Amen.
