Monday, March 15, 2010 ~ Twenty-third Day of Lent

The Prodigal Son said, “I will get up and go to my father, and I will say to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you; I am no longer worthy to be called your son.’” Luke 15:18

The parable of the prodigal son is familiar to us all. The basic theme is a beautiful and poignant message of love, sinfulness, repentance, and forgiveness.

On the son’s request, the father gave him a portion of the family resources. When he had spent all his money on “loose living” and was desperate, the son decided to return home. There his father greeted him with great joy and celebration.

The decision of the wayward son to return to his family roots represents his humble repentance. The father’s acceptance of the son reflects an example of love, compassion, and forgiveness. Isn’t this a powerful metaphor for God’s unconditional love and support for each of us?
