Wednesday, March 3, 2010 ~ Thirteenth Day of Lent

The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid? Psalm 27:1

Such confidence! Imagine being so closely in touch with God to put absolute confidence in God. The Psalmist must have had such a relationship, must have been inspired by God’s acts of faithfulness in the past, and therefore knew that God would be the same in the future. This sense of dependence is boldly declared where the metaphor of God is "my light," which is seconded by that of God as "my salvation." Nowhere else in the Old Testament is God referred to as "my light." The effect of the language here is to convey a relationship with God that is intimately familiar. This psalm brings God very near indeed. It’s only through prayer and knowledge of God in Scripture and in life that we could possibly be as confident as the Psalmist.

Let us pray

God, fill us with your light this day, that we might know you and trust you with full confidence and assurance. Amen.
